Choosing the right cocktail shaker is important. After all, you want yourself and your guests to be drinking the cocktails, not wearing them! Professional bartenders tend to go for a classic Boston shaker, which has two separate cups. When joined together, these form a tight seal, which helps make sure there is little or no spillage – vital for those still perfecting their shaking skills. There are many versions of the Boston shaker, with a variety of shapes and styles. Most home mixologists favour cobbler shakers, which often look great and have a built-in strainer, but can be more prone to warping and leaks.

If yours is a modern home, perhaps with a high-gloss kitchen, you may prefer a stainless steel cobbler shaker as they are made more for their looks and may match your décor better. Set on a stainless steel tray with cut crystal glasses, it will provide a striking contrast with a natural stone worktop. To complement a more traditional style kitchen with woodgrain surfaces and doors, you may prefer a Boston, Parisian or Manhattan shaker with its two traditional or tinted cups.

And now we’ve helped you join the movers and shakers, here’s a cocktail recipe for you to try…
